Over time, life science consultancies have shown increasing interest in hiring PhD candidates. Within this space, PhDs are in growing demand due to the advanced skills, knowledge, and analytical abilities developed through rigorous academic training. Interestingly, the level at which PhD candidates are typically recruited varies across consultancies. This inconsistency can lead to frustration among candidates, who may feel undervalued, sometimes prompting a move into industry roles or a return to academic research.

We had the opportunity to speak with Melinda Kutzing, a Partner at Bionest Partners, to discuss the current market demand for PhD hiring. Despite the challenges in attracting PhD talent, 23% of Bionest Partners’ employees hold PhDs, including two of the firm’s partners. Compared to other consultancies, Bionest stands out for actively recognizing and recruiting PhD candidates.

1) What makes a PhD successful in consulting?

Completing a PhD equips individuals with a valuable skillset: the ability to work independently, conduct high-quality research, and rapidly digest complex scientific information. These skills allow PhD candidates to understand mechanisms and pathways across projects, giving them a strong foundation for consulting work.

2) Key considerations for PhD candidates

While PhDs bring a proven skillset, it is important to recognize that consulting is not a natural continuation of academic research—it is a career switch. PhDs often excel at research and autonomous data analysis, but consulting requires synthesizing information through a strategic lens to address business challenges, rather than simply presenting a scientific story. Developing these consulting-specific skills is essential for rapid growth and progression.

At entry-level, PhDs may be managed by individuals with less scientific experience but more consulting expertise. This can be frustrating, as PhDs may perceive their managers as “junior.” At Bionest, PhDs are recognized for their unique capabilities through competitive compensation and a flexible career path that allows accelerated progression once core consulting skills are acquired.

3) At what level should a PhD enter consulting?

Assigning a more senior title does not guarantee success in consulting. PhDs’ skillsets may help them progress quickly, but no one inherently “knows” how to be a consultant from day one. Titles are sometimes used to attract candidates, but artificially elevated positions can hinder self-development and slow career progression.

Bionest avoids this by placing PhDs at the execution or entry level, enabling them to develop experience in creating business presentations and applying the consulting framework. This approach ensures expectations remain aligned and allows PhDs to grow effectively into their consulting roles.

4) Why should a PhD join Bionest?
“We talk like scientists, think like MBAs, and work like true partners, doing whatever it takes to deliver actionable results.”

Bionest is recognized for its scientific focus and thought leadership in therapeutic areas including Oncology, Orphan, and CNS. The firm also emphasises cell/gene therapies and precision medicine/diagnostics across Commercial, Corporate, and Product strategy projects. This strong scientific foundation creates an environment where PhDs can successfully transition into consulting and thrive.
